Input-Output and Innate Learning Theories
Mission of the Unit:
Students will explore the relationship between letters and sounds, learning strategies to decode, spell, and understand words, building strong foundational reading and writing skills.
Learning Objectives:
- Apply phonics rules to decode and encode words accurately.
- Use blending, segmenting, and other phonics strategies in reading and spelling.
- Identify and apply phonetic patterns in written and spoken language.
Learning Outcomes:
- Decode and spell CVC, digraph, and R-controlled words.
- Apply 25 phonics strategies fluently.
- Recognize phonetic patterns and use them in reading and writing.

Peter Horton is an educator and curriculum designer with over 20 years of experience helping students learn English and succeed in school. He has taught more than 3,500 students and trained 150 teachers across China, Korea, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.
As the founder of PeterHortonEducator-TESOL, he develops lessons, flipbooks, and interactive activities that make reading, writing, and speaking English easier and more engaging. He has created more than 160 curriculum units for grades 5–8, providing teachers and parents with practical tools to support student learning.
Passionate about accessible education, Peter focuses on helping students build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and develop real-world English communication abilities.
