Different Standards for Teaching English
Different countries have different ways to teach English. In Europe, they have the European Standard for learning languages. In America, schools often use WIDA, which helps teachers know how to teach English to students who are learning it as a second language.
What is the difference between ESL and EFL?
ESL (English as a Second Language) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) are similar, but they are used in different situations:
- ESL is for people who live in an English-speaking country. They learn English because they need it for school, work, or daily life. For example, if a student moves to America from Mexico, they would be in an ESL class to learn English.
EFL is for people who live in a country where English is not the main language. They learn English because they want to, but they don’t need it to live their daily lives. For example, a student in Japan might take EFL classes to learn English for travel or business.
Language Learning Around the World
In some countries, like India, many people speak several languages. It is common for someone to know three to seven languages! In the United States, most people only speak one language, which is English. So, when someone comes to America and says that English is their second language, it means they learned it after their first language.

In American schools, there are ESL teachers who help new students learn English. At first, these students might take ESL classes. After some time, they can join regular English classes with everyone else.
Testing and Resources
In Summary
ESL helps people learn English when they move to an English-speaking country English, and there are many resources available to help students succeed.. It is different from EFL, which is for people learning English in their own country. Many countries have their own ways of teaching.
